Story Behind the Song
Luke 2:15-21
15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.
21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

one night in bethlehem © 2001 chunz & carr
mary kept all these things
pondering them in her heart
it was a cold clear night on the outskirts
of the town where david was born
after a long hard ride
my promised bride
really needed a place to stay warm for the night
i pushed through the crowded courtyard
and found the innkeeper by the door
he shook his head
i'm sorry he said
we just don't have any more room tonight
but if you walk just beyond that meadow
you'll find a place where livestock feed
there isn't much
just straw and such
but it just might be what you folks need for tonight
at first the smell was offensive
but we got used to it after a while
she said it's alright joe
and i want you to know
i'm really depending on seeing your smile tonight
so i hung the lantern and made her a pillow
looking for comforting words to say
i'll keep you from harm
are the blankets warm ?
oh dear lord just have your way tonight
[instrumental verse]
she had given birth before i knew it
like a miracle in a dream
i gave his bottom a slap
then in swaddling wrapped
the most beautiful boy i have ever seen in my life
then i laid him on the straw in the manger
so both of us could behold
the glorious grace
of that tiny face
brought all the happiness our hearts could hold that night
[chorus]
a stable and shepherds angels and kings
what a way to start
and mary kept all these things
pondering them in her heart
we heard the sound of sheep drawing nearer
then i let some shepherds come in
they saw an angel appear
saying do not fear
a savior is born for you in bethlehem tonight
[chorus]
then a flash exploded the heavens
and kept shining into the morn
magi from afar
would follow that star
with gifts for the humble king born that night
[chorus]
