Story Behind the Song
This song was the inspiration for the working title to my second solo project ("The Lonesome Fire") which of course never happened. At the point when it became clear that I would not be doing a follow up to my 1991 solo effort, I asked two of my former band mates to help me demo out the song for possible inclusion in a "Best Of Crumbächer" collection that the label was rumored to be putting together. A&R decided that they would not be interested in any new material for the upcoming compilation however and released "Time After Time" as the final Crumbächer album in 1992. The demo for "By Our Love" remains one of my favorite songs we ever recorded as a band, in spite of the fact that no one was given the chance to hear it… until now.
Lyrics
At the edge of California
Where the breakers pound the sands
When the evening sun calls up the rings of flames
In a cozy little corner
Huddled close and holding hands
A believers circle seeks what it proclaims
Fishermen with empty nets
Around the lonesome fire
Lift their voices singing
Singing…
By our love, by our love, by our love
They’ll know us… by our love
On a crest of San Andreas
High above the prefab air
There’s a young romantic strumming a guitar
To impressionistic faces
In the warm hypnotic glare
Of a blaze that beckons deep into the dark
Romeos and Juliets
Around the lonesome fire
Join their voices singing
Singing…
By our love, by our love, by our love
They’ll know us… by our love
Burning firelight
Inspiring all we say
While passions of the night
Drift in to fade away… they fade away
I remember silhouettes
Around the lonesome fire
And all the voices singing
They’re still singing…
By our love, by our love, by our love
They’ll know us… by our love…
