Story Behind the Song
This song was inspired by a number of things.
1.
First, a friend needed a "Marlene Dietrich crooner" song for his play in L.A. Hence the music (which borrows one particularly tiny bit from Sinatra).
2.
An ordeal with an insurance adjuster who was clearly a demon from hell. She was eventually fired, but not before eroding my innocent beliefs about justice and facts.
3.
Philip Larkin, a British poet (1922-1985). He wrote a wicked poem called "Vers de Societe." Read it at: http://www.artofeurope.com/larkin/lar6.htm
Lyrics
The Thing Under the Bed
has grown up with me.
Never really went away,
just gained some subtlety.
One of these days...
It hides under the table
as the guests arrive
with their brittle chatter
and their tiny lives
Oh, one of these days...
But, oh, I've said enough
I've said too much.
I no longer have those childhood fears,
dark crevice in the closet, monsters near.
No, now it's the phone and a thousand faxes,
a tiny desk globe spinning on its axis.
There's no reward, no return,
Oh Lord, when will I learn,
When will I learn?
But I've said enough
I've said enough
I've said too much.
