Story Behind the Song
Last December, I played the Sydney Opera House in Australia as part of my Winter/Summer tour (it covered both the North and South Hemispheres). The thing that I love most about playing at the "O" is that the acoustics are magnificent. However, on that night in December, these same acoustics proved detrimental. My contrabassoonist, Bernard "Jack" Ole', came down with a dreadful cold. During his solo in the middle of "Family Man," he began coughing violently into the contrabassoon, producing a terribly wretched noise. The crowd began to hiss as they perceived the coughing to be a sign of sloppiness.
In a spontaneous move to silence the hissing, the band and I began a coughing ensemble to accompany Jack. The crowd then thought that the coughing was all part of the act, and that it was planned beforehand. They loved it, and gave a standing ovation.
Now, whenever I'm in Australia, and recognized on the street, many times a fan will approach me and begin a coughing fit. It has become somewhat of an inside joke between me and the Australian people.
Lyrics
He wanted to be a family man
She wanted to be his bride
They had a lot in common
She was his mother's brother's child
But you can't pick the one you love
When two destinies collide
Anyway, he said, it's all relative
It's something you can justify
(Chorus) He said we're all in the same family
From sea to shining sea
Every man is your brother
Every girl is another sister in the land of the free
If we're all in the same family
I can marry who I choose
As long as I keep it in the family
There's no way to lose
When the time had come for their wedding day
The people were all on the same side
They were all in the same family
No need to ask for groom or bride
The preacher man he asked for any objections
And after a few had said their piece
He said let no man put asunder
Though no man knows what that word means
Chorus
