A bluegrassish, story-telling song about a guy who spends all his money paying a guitar player, fiddler and banjo player to play while he dances with three little sisters, only to wind up disappointed when, one-by-one, the sisters each run off with a band member. A knee-slapping, dancable tune that features rollicking banjo, fiddle and guitar-based instrumentation.īs

    Story Behind the Song
I woke up at about 5:30 one morning recently in the middle of a dream. I don't recall the specifics of the dream, but upon awakening, I was singing the words "Hi diddle diddle diddle hi dee dee (etc.)" in my head. I thought to myself: "you've got yourself a bluegrass song here", so I got out of bed and proceeded to write it down. By about 9:15 I was finished writing, so I woke up my wife and sang it to her. She thought it was about the best thing I'd ever written -- she wasn't even that upset about being awakened on a Saturday! It was one of those songs that just came out real easily; it's hard to really explain. Everyone that hears it is pretty blown away -- I hope that you are too. X

    Lyrics
Three little sisters sitting on a front porch
Each one's pretty in a different way
Can't figure out which one I fancy
I've been thinking 'bout 'em all through the day
The first one's a blond with a wicked smile
The second one's a redhead with a flirtin' style
The dark haired sister's just a little bit shy
but you can still see the twinkle in her hazel eyes

Hi diddle diddle diddle hi dee dee
Hi diddle diddle diddle hi dee oh
I'm gonna find me a guitar player
Toss him a dollar and off we'll go
Yodelayee -- take my money but I don't care
Yodelayee -- dance with the sister with the golden hair

I worked all day at the Del Monte cannery
Got three dollars in the pockets of my jeans
But I can't stop thinking 'bout the three little sisters
Even though I know I should be saving for my dreams
Maybe I'll take a little wander down there
Don't cost nothin' just to stop and stare
Take another look at them three little sisters
Start a conversation up if I dare

Hi diddle diddle diddle hi dee dee
Hi diddle diddle diddl e hi dee ho
I'm gonna find me a darn good fiddler
Toss him a dollar and off we'll go
Yodelayee -- spend my money but I don't care
Yodelayee -- dance with the sister with the auburn hair

My momma done told me that I'm acting like a fool
You oughta quit th e cannery and get on back to school
But even though I know that my momma's probably right
I need three dollars to dance each night
There's three little sisters just a-waiting for me
And each one of them's just as pretty as can be
So I don't got no time fo r classes
I'd rather dance with the three little lasses

Hi diddle diddle diddle hi dee dee
Hi diddle diddle diddle hi dee ho
I'm gonna find me a banjo picker
Toss him a dollar and off we'll go
Yodelayee -- got no money but I don't care
Yodelayee -- da nce with the sister with the raven hair

Well now I done danced with each little sister
Don't got nothin' but a three dollar grin
Better get myself back up to the cannery
Make more money and do it all again
One of these days I'm a gonna be a rich man
Pick me a sister and move away
But up until then I'll just keep on keepin' on
Dancin' all night and workin' all day
Hi diddle diddle diddle hi dee dee
Hi diddle diddle diddle hi dee oh
I'm gonna save till I got a hundred dollars
Grab me a sister and off we'll go
Yodelayee -- workin' all day but I got nothin' yet
Yodelayee -- gotta pay the band every dollar that I get

When I got home from work last night
I went to see the sisters but somethin' wasn't right
By the time I got there there was no one around
Just a b roken old guitar pick lying on the ground
The wicked little blonde ran off with the fiddler
The redhead flirt with the guitar man
And the guy who left with the dark haired sister
Still had a banjo in his hand
Hi diddle diddle diddle hi dee dee
Hi didd le d iddle diddle hi dee oh
    I'v been a-workin' while they've been a-courtin'
I've got nothin' but a blister on my toe
Yodelayee -- my dancin' days have come to an end
Yodelayee -- I'm gonna join me a bluegrass band
Yodelayee -- I'm gonna join me a bluegrass band
