A straight ahead rocker in the Steve Miller, BTO vein.Highly derivative, but fun. Every once in awhile I've got to do one like this. My wife laughs, because I'm about as far away from a "blue collar man" as you can get, but I think the song captures the "working man's blues" feel pretty well for a guy who has never gotten his fingernails dirty.

    CD: Happytown   Label: Drake Records
Credits: Written and produced by Gaither Drake. Guitars, lead vocal by Gaither Drake. Steve Oliveria (bass); David Maraman (drums); Denise Doering, Claudia Crosetti, Rainbow Snavely, Addie Clement (backing vocals). Engineered by Steve Oliveria.

    Story Behind the Song
I needed a straight rock song for my Happytown album. I was after a "Junior's Farm" kind of sound -- just guitar, bass and drums -- but it ended up sounding a lot like Steve Miller or BTO. Written very quickly and fairly easy to record, with the exception of the backing vocals, done by Mendocino College recording students. It took some time to get those right.

    Lyrics
I wake up every morning 'fore the day is new
Down a cup of coffee and put on my shoes
I work all day, got a night job too
    24-7, I'm working for you

I'm showing up on time and I'm staying out of trouble
Not much money, but what can you do?
The boss says : "Gator man you gotta work a double"
But I don't mind 'cuz I'm workin' for you

Workin' for you (7 to 5)
Workin' for you (I'm barely alive)
Workin' for you (to buy you more stuff)
Workin' for you (it's never enough)

One of these days I'm a gonna hit the lotto
Cash my ticket, my work'll be through
When that day happend gonna have to change my motto
But up until then I'll keep workin' for you

Workin' for you (no time to play)
Workin' for you (every night and day)
    Workin' for you (minimum wage)
Workin' for you (like a rat in a cage)
Workin' for you (I'm a blue collar man)
Workin' for you (just doin' what I can)
