Story Behind the Song
The title refers to the barrio in Madrid, Spain where I spent three years - a home to immigrants, characters that could have walked off the set of an Almodovar film, and to the traditional Spaniards of Cervantes. The lyrics talk of Calle Pelayo, the Brazilians on the corner, the drug addicts, and the flowers on the balconies. All of this facing south to Andelucia, to the gypsies and bullfighters of classic Spain. I set this picture to a samba, owing to my interest in music of Brazil.
Lyrics
The lyrics are by Sonya Vallet, who took a stream of consciousness in English and put it very nicely in Spanish.
