Story Behind the Song
I had taken time to mic up my drumkit on Sunday, Sept. 16, and wanted to record some raw drums to build some songs onto. After recording two usable drumbeats - an altrock groove and a metal mashfest - I tried a sloppy hardcore beat which lurched through some ungainly changes, and at one point changed its mind and spilled into a stepping reggae beat. I thought it would be funny to try to build a song over THAT crazy drumming.
I came up with some riffs to fit the changes in the drumming, and added bass, and then filled in the reggae guitars. I let this recording sit for weeks until Sunday, Oct. 7, when I decided to listen to the mess and force some Tangentor-based lyrics into the mix. I wrote and recorded these lyrical pearls that night, burned a CD, and upon listening the next morning, determined that my new baby was hideously ugly but somewhat charming.
Still, the robot Tangentor VII deserves tribute, and as he struggles to understand humanity's dual nature, perhaps this song will help humans see his point of view.
Lyrics
TANGENTOR VII
written, performed and produced by Chris Williams
Bass and four guitars were built onto a spontaneous drum track recorded the same day - Sept. 16, 2001.
Vocals added Oct. 7, 2001.
TANGENTOR - the interdimensional robot that cannot be touched.
TANGENTOR - he's studied seventies pop culture a bit too much.
74 feet tall; you cower in awe.
TANGENTOR - he's skewering a sea monster that theatens land.
TANGENTOR - he brings it by the village in a frying pan.
He's massively armed, and can shift out of phase.
He's triple redundant, a vast mental maze.
*** HE SHALL PREVAIL ***
Ion cannons. Plasma ray. Multispectral scan array.
Drillbit fists or magno plates. Armored as the need dictates.
(quote:) I AM THE ROBOT TANGENTOR VII
It would be advisable that you comply with the nice robot now, OK?
Why can no one explain to this robot humankind is OK?
He's monitored us long enough to know all about Genghis Khan and OJ;
he knows we have hearts, but he's seen us all decide not to use them...
when it would feel so good to get rhythm.
(quote:) REGGAE MUSIC LIVETH ON AND ON IN THE MOUTH OF THE PEOPLE FOR I-TERNITY
Tangentor was quoted as saying rock steady was musically tricky
And played me some reggae made in the sixties...
Jamaicans taking over the mixing...
(quote:) I AND I AND I NO CAN BE DISSUADED BY BABYLON'S CRITI-SCHISM
I SHALL CONTINUE MAKING REGGAE UNTIL I CEASE TO FUNCTION
TANGENTOR - he's known to kick a beat or two; he thrashes well
TANGENTOR - you better believe his double bass is fast as hell.
he doesn't need a companion in his secret box canyon
he can thrash or just skank it - Tangentor VII rocks - CRANK IT
