The Freedom Train is a song that speaks to our complacency about the freedoms we enjoy here in the U.S. Since September 11th, Americans have become aware that we should can no longer take these freedoms for granted but must work together to ensure freedom for us and bring freedom to those around the world.

    Story Behind the Song
I started writing this song about freedom before September 11, 2001. It was inpired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I finished it after those terrible events which affected us all and the song took a different tone. The recording is a simple guitar and voice recording done in one evening with the help of my friend Brent Karley.

    Freedom Train
Word and Music By Tom Hokanson

We’ve been going too long just coastin’ along
Been too many years since we’ve sung this song
Nobody should rest ‘til everybody’s been blessed
To get on on board that Freedom Train

“Thank God Almighty we’re free at last”
Is that the voice of the future or just a ghost from the past
I see anger and war, we feel hunger and pain
And it won’t go away ‘til we come to the day
When everybody can say we’re on the Freedom Train

Teach all of your children so they’ll understand
The healing that must come all across this great land
United we stand to let freedom reign
To open the door to that Freedom Train

Thank God Almighty we’re free and strong
And the voice that you’re hearing is Liberty’s song
Some buildings may fall but the torch will stand tall
And it won’t go away ‘til the end of the age
When everybody can say we’re on the Freedom Train

So take up the fight, stand up for what’s right
‘Cause God does not care who’s black and who’s white
Hold on to your dreams, find out what it means
To get on board that Freedom Train

If you follow that freedom journey you’ll see that love is flowing
Through the walls and over fences we can see where freedom’s going
Everywhere the nation’s crying , everywhere the flag is flying
God is beside our nation “we shall overcome”

Nobody should rest ‘til everybody’s been blessed
To get on on board that Freedom Train
United we stand to let freedom reign
To open the door to that Freedom Train
