Story Behind the Song
My dad died when I was 9 months old. This song asks what life would have been like if he'd been around.
Recorded in home studio in 1998. Song started in Austin, Texas in 1995 while watching my own son playing in Circle C Park (age 6).
Lyrics
I WONDER (c) Andy Thornton Mills, 1998
I was young, just started my life
A new soul, a brand new smile
One more for the world
Helpless in this strange new light
What more could you ask, a perfect delight
A family with mother and father alright
None could bear, thoughts of one not there
Leaving the other alive
I wonder what it would have been like
If you were around
You missed just about all of my life
Your sun (just) went down
You slipped out of sight
Dad where did you go that night
There were things I needed to say,
Through all of my life, to your face
But all I could do, was pray
And hope that you heard, somehow
What more could you ask, at least I had life
When you had been drawn away to the light
The space that you left, the empty room
Knowing you wouldn't be coming back soon
