Story Behind the Song
This incarnation of the band, Dyar, actually began with this song in 1990, when the three original members, Jason Smith (17, drums), Jason Wilson (17, bass), and Brandon Whitmore (15, guitar) held auditions for a new vocalist. 15 year old Ben Hedges answered the ad and, after the initial meeting went well, they decided to hold an impromptu jam session to see if they melded as well creatively as they did musically.
The collaboration was successful beyond what any of them had expected, with Brandon and the Jasons playing some of their developing instrumental scores, and Ben improvising the lyrics and melodies. Out of that jam session came two full-fledged songs; "What Do You Want From Me," and the one which you see here, "Darkening." Thus Dyar was born.
"What Do You Want From Me," ended up being re-written twice and recorded once in the three years of the group's active status, before being removed from their repertoire altogether. "Darkening," however, stayed on their set lists until their last show in 1993. The band recorded it twice, and it was a favorite among their meager following.
"Darkening" really captures the adolescence and earnest of the group, as well as the inexperience of the sound engineers (not to mention Ben's propensity to base much of his song lyrics on stories read in Fantasy novels). Its many mistakes (both musical and technical) and melodromatic delivery project a very real, very genuine sound. Not what they were going for, but good nontheless, as the sound is so much more honest.
Lyrics
I look into the flame of the candle burning in the dark
Stare at the emptiness around me
I remember when they came to me to help them in their plot
How would I know how they would use me
But now I've seen The Darkening
I can't believe I helped them make it real
Deep within my soul I scream
How can I continue dreaming now that I know?
In their grasp I journeyed forward to claim the prize that they did seek
Brainwashed so confused and unknowing
Left, right, left I wandered helpless to my fated destiny
I barely knew where I was going
They'll bring about The Darkening
It all made sense before, but now I wonder
Maybe it's the truth I've seen?
They say their gods will rise and save this world of bitter pain
I look into the flame of the candle burning in the dark
Stare through the shadows that surround me
Thoughts tear the twisted of my lonely shattered mind
At least I know they'll never find
They'll never see their Darkening
My death will see their failure, my salvation
A fatal wound and one last scream
I take with me the knowledge they so need
And now I die
