Story Behind the Song
Theodore is quite complex in his simplicity. He's obviously different, but he cannot recognize it, due to an open-minded condition that can be referred to as naivete.
Lyrics
Let's see Theodore Reilly wearing yesterday's blue jeans and a smile
For angel that had kissed him on the head
Sitting on the bus stop, counting out a dollar twenty five
From the pennies that were lying on the ground
Chorus:
Though he hates the life he's living
he despises charity
He'd trade every guilty dollar for
an ounce of dignity
And he asked me
Not to tell anybody his name
Let's see Theodore Reilly chasing planes across the sky
Does he catch them?
No, but he keeps going trying just the same
And he's so scared of lightning, he runs in to his mother who then cries
"Oh, Theodore! When will you open up your eyes?"
Chorus
Let's see Theodore Reilly waking up on Christmas morning like a child
Where he finds everything he thinks he'll need this year
His favorite toy is broken, he runs up to his father, who then scolds
"Goddamnit, Theodore!
You're twenty-three years old!"
Chorus
Let's see Theodore Reilly
Laughing with the world that laughs at him
