Story Behind the Song
This song, at its core, is hopelessly corny
and self-indulgent. Not surprisingly,
songwriters tend to love it. The rhythim section was recorded backwards: first the guitars, then the bass, then the piano, then the drums. The drummer on this is my long-time friend Edward Sanchez. We were recording him and his brother. I happened to have the 'all i hear' tracks lying around, and so while his brother was on a smoke break, I asked him to take a crack at this song. He had never heard it before, and there were no lyrics to guide him. I mock conducted the song with my hands as though before an entire orchestra, and Ed, who has always possessed remarkable instincts, did it in one take. (You can hear at the end that he's not really sure when its supposed to end.) Its a great take, and the song really has tremendous energy and immediacy. Its still kind of corny, though.
Lyrics
touch me with your hand
maybe i could feel
show me all those lights
you want me to see
lead me by your steady heart
as mine so rarely beats
all i hear
is a band
in my ears
in my head
all i hear
roll down all your windows
i like the breeze
let your hair fall down
all over me
even faster
even farther
i look and i believe
but all i hear
is a band
in my ears
in my head
all i hear
all i hear is all myself
and no one else makes a sound
all i hear is all myself
and no one else has a place here
i'm the only one
i hear silence
when the breeze hits my ears
i hear silence
whenever you lie near
i hear everything
you never say
when you understand
