Story Behind the Song
My wife and I were watching the Ladies Individual competition
in the 1998 Winter Olympics. After Michelle Kwan lost, she tearfully said,
"I hope you all still love me!" In Tara Lipinski's interview, she
said she was only concerned about enjoying the moment of
being in the Olympics. I was really struck by the contrast between these two.
Michelle was trying to please others and failed to do her best. Tara was just
happy to be out there and she performed flawlessly. The next day, I sat down and
wrote this tune in a couple of hours, picturing Tara skating to it as a "command performance" to
her Gold Medal winning performance. After composing this piece, the other nine pieces that
make up the CD "A Road Less Traveled" were written over the next six weeks.
