Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27/2 (1801): Adagio sostenuto. Whether or not Rellstab's poetic comparison of this movement with a moonlit night on the Vierwaldstätter Sea can be justified, I have never managed to relate the inwardness of the Adagio with moonlight shining on a sea. The first movement is most certainly a nocturne; however, the darkness of this night is not for a moment brightened by a mild, soft moonlight! Heavy, gloomy is this movement, grief-stricken and – if an image be permitted – reminds one of the music accompanying a funeral procession. | MP3.com CD: Beethoven: Sonatas Vol. 5 - buy it!
