Story Behind the Song
This piece was first concieved in 1995, a few months prior to the death of Jonbenet. It was intended as a flute solo to be performed at my local church. The person who was to perform this left the church. I put the piece away. Later, I learned of the death of Jonbenet. I visited many web sites and read the outpouring of grief from people all of the country. I decided to use that piece to express the emotion that I found on the internet.
It was not until I provided this for MP3.com that I added the segment where you can hear the voice of Alex Hunter in the background.
Lyrics
Jonbenet
On a cold December day,
at the breaking of the dawn,
A note was found,
and this little child was gone,
Her name was Jonbenet,
and why did she have to go,
At such a cost,
it's something we may never know.
Why did she die is what
the world is asking now,
Although we've felt such pain I know,
we will survive somehow,
You've touched us all,
sweet Jonbenet,
In a very special way,
Although you're gone,
we'll not forget,
In our hearts you'll always stay,
For now,
a sad farewell to Jonbenet.
Here is a transcript of Alex Hunter during the instrumental break.
"The death of this child has broken all of our hearts. It has left a permanent scar on our conscience. There must be accountability, there will be accountability in this case, I promise you."
