Story Behind the Song
i wrote this song on a visit to austin from lake charles, LA. i was so disgusted with the disease of disbelief and the very real disease spread by the petrochemical industries that were killing my hometown. i love louisiana in all its pritine magesty mystery and sin, but to see a whole people sacrificing their very land and air, the pride of the people, to foreigners and feeling as though these folks will protect them. . . i felt like we were married to these folks under guises of "security" and "progress," when they were poisoning the very fruit they promised to protect. I will not be your dirty wife.
Lyrics
Smokestacks burning high steal the stars out of the sky
What we found under the bridge will never keep us satisfied
What good is it to know we’re moving forward when we’re blind?
What good is it to know that it’s a slow death that we’re dying?
I have taken all the teas; I’ve performed all the rights
I have gambled my last pennies, my last nickels and my dimes
I have sacrificed my younger years to feed your hungry fire
I have seen the devil’s mistress shining brightly in your eyes
In the Shelter of your Love I have Chosen to reside
But the roof is thatched with impotence and sanctified with lies
Sanctified with lies
Sanctified with Lies
Hell Hounds Howl
At the gates of your river running high
Hell Hounds Howl
I will not be baptized, no no, I will not be baptized
Smokestacks burning high steal the breath out of the life
You have sacrificed so many I won’t be your dirty wife
I won’t be your dirty wife, no no, I won’t be. . .
