    Story Behind the Song
This is one of those songs which started with a single verse and a concept - easily continued through the additional verses. People say I sing this as if it really is from the heart, yet it's no way a sad song; I do this one with a grin, because I can see all those fading hippies out there perking up and recognising what I mean! Also, it's a great one for getting other musicians to play along with, and amusing because it shifts up a key twice during the song, and I end up shouting 'Up to D!' and 'Up to E!' between the verses for bass players or guitarists who pitch in and join me when I do it at sessions. In the couple of month since I wrote this in July 2001, it's become my signature tune!n

    Lyrics
    (Spoken - backing Am/F/G/Am/Em/Am)
They say sixty-seven was all that it seemed
A summer of love, a doorway to dreams
But hell, not for me! I was only fifteen
And the best years were yet to come...

(into song rythm - key of C major)
    Take me back to 1969!
I wanna do it all again!
    I running out of time,
I'm so much older now than then!
I wanna make my way back home,
Walk the paths I never found
Because someone went ahead of me
    And turned the signposts round...

    Take me back to 1969
I wanna play that tune again!
I want to fade out on the line
    Where the music never ends
I wanna turn the volume up
And sing the songs I heard
Before someone locked the tuning dial
    And that station disappeared!

(up to D major, shift one whole tone)

    Take me back to 1969,
I wanna catch that bus again!
I want to stand there in the line,
    Just waiting in the rain.
I want to walk you right back home
    By the gaslamp's fading light,
Before they powered up our street
    And burned away the night!

    Take me back to 1969!
I wanna write this book again!
Now I can read between the lines,
And I know just how it ends...
I wanna make those bullets miss,
    The lovers live another day,
Before they bomb our sinking ship
    And blow us both away!

(Up to E major, shift one tone again)

    (First verse repeat)

Resolve A major back to Am as beginning
    (intro repeat with fade)
    End with A major chord
