Story Behind the Song
Donna and Susan were born in the same hospital on July 14, 1953(Bastille Day, France's equivalent of our Independence Day). But so were a lot of other kids. Their mothers started a friendship there and it carried over to the girls. These two grew up together, went to grade school and OU (Ohio University) together, and 40 years later are still best friends!
This song tells their story (with help from sound bites of their two husbands, who always do something special to celebrate their wives' birthday -- this year it was this special song!).
There's a lot in the lyrics the casual listener may miss: the references to Intimate Apparel and Splendid Faire, the girls' businesses - a lingerie shop and catering service respectively, as an example. But the subject of the song is valid on its own terms: Good Friends Are Hard To Find!
Lyrics
Good friends are hard to find,
Some never do, some take their good old time;
But you're lucky, you were born with each other,
Good friends are so hard to find.
Born in People's Hospital, July 14,
Through the Elms, OU and Fort Wayne to 1993,
Now you walk the park for a little exercise,
And a chance to get together and bitch about the guys.
From Swampside Manor to Miami, you serve your Splendid Faire,
At night you might recline in Intimate Apparel,
Another birthday's here, but don't fear getting older,
Cause we both love you more, and each day we're growing closer.
(CH) Good friends are hard to find!
Get the camera, smile if you please,
I've checked the film Susan, it's ok to say cheese
Pack the tent Donna, you know I can't sew!
It's your birthday and we just want you both to know...
{CH) Good friends are hard to find!
