    Story Behind the Song
Some friends of ours back in Phoenix eventually returned to the Atlanta area, and were the inspiration behind changing the words to this 1980 song. Originally it was called "I'm A Mountain Man", describing my difficulty in adjusting to El Paso after 7 years near beautiful forested mountains (Salt Lake City). But the new scenario is better. The words describe the wife's feelings (Georgia MAN? "Woman" does not rhyme with "land") while the music is better suited to the hubbie.

    GEORGIA MAN
    ©1980/1997/2001 by John G. Fausett

    Good-bye shifting sand
    Falling through my hand
I'm a Georgia man going home to my land

    I'll trade your cactus spines
    For the southern pines
Swap your barren skies for lazy fireflies

    Though the desert dust
    Has settled upon my heart
I will always be a Georgia man

    There's little I can embrace
    In this desolate place
    My mind just can't erase
    My dear Atlanta's face

    I feel a tugging within
    To be among my kin
I've tried so hard to blend
    But my frustration won't end

    Though the desert dust
    Has settled upon my heart
I will always be a Georgia man

    I'll miss your sunsets
    And your jagged silhouettes
    But there's no prickly pear
    In my family tree ----
    I'm a Georgia man

    Desert, please understand
    I'm impressed with your land
But for Dixie I yearn and I need to return

    Though the desert dust
    Has settled upon my heart
I will always be a Georgia man

I will always be a Georgia man
    (I need a greener location)
I will always be a Georgia man
    (And more precipitation)
I will always be a Georgia man
