Story Behind the Song
This songs brings up a lot of things for me…it was spurred out of me by a friend debating over whether or not to keep a baby, which got me thinking about tough decisions I made in my life, which got me thinking about the problems Heidi and I used to have, and how we got through it – pretty much as an act of sheer will and determined love – We stood by each other.
Lyrics
You can write me any time
Or you can call out my name
You can stay here for awhile
You talk; I'll sit still
We can do this any way you’d like
I can't tell you what you should do
But I know firsthand you can't keep it inside
I cannot tell you what you should do
But I will stand by your side
Light a candle for your sorrow
I'll light a tear for mine
"Our struggles bring us out," you said – I know
I know
We don't have to fight tomorrow
All we have is now
Let's not let those bastards have their way
It's our time now
I can't tell you what you should do
But I know that you can't keep it bottled up inside
I cannot tell you what you should do
But I will stand by your side
When the night falls so hard your heart will break
Open your eyes and look around
And all we have is now
I still can taste your tears
I still can taste your breath
It's still that way with me I confess
I don't know what I should do
But I know that I can't keep this inside
And I cannot tell you what you should do
But I will stand by your side
(repeat 1st verse)
