Story Behind the Song
Explanation of money clip:
It's like when a friend will ask for a ride somewhere, or ask for help moving, or to borrow a few dollars. How often do you find yourself hoping for some sort of reward for your efforts, or saying "Can you pay me back?" It's become almost instinctual and frankly, I can't stand that realization. You go through enough intense broke periods of eating two bagels a day and stealing from convenience stores and that's exactly how you start to look at things. You learn "Well I make X amount of dollars per hour, so if I spend 1.5 hours doing this favor for you and then add gas money blah blah blah," it's all so stupid.
It's strange, because we always think of the rich as the greedy ones, but I find that when it's down to one dollar in my pocket that I become more of a bastard than I ever thought was possible.
Maybe this a a greed song, maybe it's a vague anti-capital song, maybe it's an "if you don't have your friends, what have you got?" song. It's all these things and more. --jeff
Lyrics
Pockets filled up with inked up napkins. Blood, Sweat, and Tears from a satellite radio. Time is money here and both are poorly spent. Soaking up drinks and soaking napkins with ink. The switch to "fool in the rain" would be so more fitting were the roof blown off this place.
This is what makes us thieves. Movie stars in front of so many security cameras. Put prices on everything when we're told exactly how much it's worth. Freely granted favors are costing more by the day, and at what point are we buying friends?
When I can't say no to something I need, to force out a yes to loss of respect, and I guess I'll just have to take it.
Back of the same bar napkin I've drawn up plans for the home and land we'll all share. Where the only thing we'll have, the only thing we'll need, the only thing we'll spend is time
