    Story Behind the Song
When the Israelites were making their way through the desert, being led by Moses ("the prophet formerly known as the Prince of Egypt"), they were provided with a unique kind of food. Not having a word for it, they referred to it (in the vernacular Hebrew) with a term that can be translated as "whatchamacallit." This became the word "manna." If I'm not mistaken, this is an example of transliteration, which is taking a word in one language and pronouncing it using the closest equivalent sounds in another language. This happens a lot with proper names, especially. (If you can think of any examples, e-mail them to me and I'll include them here). Read "the REST of the story" in Exodus chapter 16.

Basically this song is a relationship song, celebrating that odd and (sometimes)wonderful phase of a relationship where you don't know exactly what it is or where it's going, but you are enjoying the ride so far! Unfortuately, that happy ambiguity was about the best thing about the relationship I had in mind in this song; it didn't last much longer after the (melo-)dramatic clarifying took place. But that's another song altogether.

    Lyrics
The Israelites ate manna in the desert
It came to them just like the morning dew
    It didn't have a name
But they ate it just the same
Given the alternatives, I guess I would have, too

No one had too much and none too little
    Talk about your wonder bread
    It kept them all alive
    Until they all arrived
And though they were a stubborn lot
    Still someone might have said

    CHORUS 1:
I thank God for this whatchamacallit
Perhaps I don't need labels in this place
    It's a brand new thing
    This world has never seen
A sweet reminder of His daily grace

I thank God for this whatchamacallit
Whatever else may come my way
    He leads me into hunger
To feed me from His hand
It's making me a stronger man today

Adam had it made there in the Garden
    Luxuriating in primeval bliss
    Creatures great and small
    He'd given names to all
And yet he couldn't say what seemed amiss

God decided man would need a helper
And woke him with a wonderful surprise
She was one of Adam's kind
    So suitably designed
Excitedly, delightedly he began to verbalize (CH 1)

    BRIDGE:
Until I come to terms with our endearment
These insufficient lines will have to do
And though I'd like to say it all more clearly
It seems that I can only think of euphemisms

    CHORUS 2:
I thank God for this whatchamacallit
I don't know what the future holds in store
    He leads me into hunger
To feed me from His hand
And I discover what I'm longing for
I discover what I'm longing for
