Story Behind the Song
Every day hundreds of thousands of Canadians arrive at their local convenience store in anticipation of that buzz they get from scratching those little scratch lotto cards. This is a humorous look into that Canadian addiction.
Lyrics
The Winner ( words and music © 1997 Gerry Gray)
Roll up all them pennies, rob that piggy bank
when you win the lotto, you know who they will thank.
Scratch them ol' scratch tickets, 'til your fingers' sore,
if you don't win, no big deal, the stores got plenty more.
You don't need to work, like your brother Bob.
When you win you'll tell your boss "You can shove this job".
Drop your whole paycheck into that slot machine,
and if you lose, hey don't sweat it, sell your fax machine.
CHORUS
You're gonna strike it rich, one of these fine days.
Maybe then that gamblin itch will finally go away.
But you don't need to feel guilty buddy, if you just can't win,
nothin' in the bible sayin' gamblin' is a sin.
Go down to the corner store to get apack of smokes,
leave the house with fifty bucks and you come back home broke.
Your wife don't understand, thinks your head is in the sand,
she'll say, "You're addicted, should be committed"
did'nt work out like she planned.
And now you're wondrin' wher all your money went.
Landlord knockin' at the door lookin' for the rent.
Look sincere and tell him "Just a few days more".
You'll pay that bill and get a thrill at the convenience store.
CHORUS
You're gonna strike it rich, one of these fine days.
Maybe then that gamblin itch will finally go away.
But you don't need to feel guilty buddy, if you just can't win,
nothin' in the bible sayin' gamblin' is a sin.
But when you get back home and your wife and kids ain't there
and when you wonder why your life just don't seem fair.
Well buy a lotto ticket and things will be alright
'Cause you will be a millionaire by tomorrow night,
Yeahl buy a lotto ticket buddy and things will be alright
'Cause you will be a millionaire by tomorrow night.
CHORUS
You're gonna strike it rich, one of these fine days.
Maybe then that gamblin itch will finally go away.
But you don't need to feel guilty buddy, if you just can't win,
nothin' in the bible sayin' gamblin' is a sin
nothin' in the bible sayin' gamblin' is a sin
nothin' in the bible sayin' gamblin' is a sin.
