Story Behind the Song
This song was written while I was on board the Sloop Clearwater, which sails up and down the Hudson River teaching kids how to keep the river clean. I was hanging out with Pete Seeger and the rest of the crew of that fantastic boat, singing all sorts of songs, and I thought to myself that I'd like to try writing a traditional sounding song about some of what's happening right now in the oceans. This song has also been recorded by several other artists, including Magpie and Dean Stevens.
Lyrics
I am a dolphin, rollin' in the sea
My passion is to live, and to live I must be free
I am a travellin', rollin' in the sea
I am bound for home in the bay of Waikiki
CHORUS:
Will I ever make it home, home, home,
jumpin' in the foam -
swimmin' in the blue briny ocean?
I swam with the tuna, rollin' in the sea
But when they came for the tuna, they also came for me
They cast their nets down over the side, rollin' in the sea
They missed me by a yard, but they killed my family
CHORUS
I saw a mighty tanker, rollin' in the sea
That ship had sprung a leak that was spreading rapidly
I swam around the oil slick, rollin' in the sea
I swam the other way just as fast as I could flee
CHORUS
I smelled a stinking garbage barge, rollin' in the sea
It carried all the poison from a poison industry
The garbage and the poison were rollin' in the sea
They dumped it o'er the side where it almost strangled me
CHORUS
I saw a brutal whaling ship, rollin' in the sea
They'd shot another whale who was dying helplessly
In rage, I breached above the waves, rollin' in the sea
I dove beneath the waves just before they shot at me
At last I saw my friendly bay, rollin' in the sea
My spirits were restored, but it still occurred to me
That I am a dolphin, rollin' in the sea
My passion is to live and to live I must be free
How did I ever make it home, home, home,
Jumpin' in the foam, swimmin' in the blue briny ocean?
