    Story Behind the Song
Somehow my imagination conjured up this scenario.
Perhaps it's how I would expect an old flame to
respond to my return. It was written and recorded
    in the Fall of 1998.

    Lyrics
well I opened your letter and I sat down beside it
and I wondered whatever possessed you to write it
it's confusing somehow you had so much to say
for the last time we spoke you were walking away

"I just can't get your face off of my mind," you said
but my last vision of you is the back of your head
and your eloquent offer was clever design
but my decision was easy, I will have to decline

because it's too late to say I'm sorry
don't make excuses for your usual flaws
it's too late to say I'm sorry
don't waste your time I've been long since a lost cause

I remember the passion, and your frantic allure
but the stress was too much for my heart to endure
the ado of desire, the acumen of your lies
made my energy drop and my blood pressure rise

there was danger each evening that you'd come through my door
'twas that quality time I had come to abhor
and your constant appraisals, in their spiritless tone
made me yearn for the days when I was alone

    (chorus)

too late to polish what left of your image
    it's a shattered reflection I see
good thing it was over before looking at you
was too much like looking at me

I don't mean to sound angry, don't mean to be cruel
you're not guilty of being a chump and a tool
though you left me so prideless, so lifeless and sad
I can't blame you for taking what I never had

so I hope all is well now, that you're happy and true
and I won't bother to tell you what you never knew
I refuse to be spiteful, I won't take any names
just one last look at your words as they go up in flames

    (chorus)
