Story Behind the Song
Little John Joseph Klem ran away from home to join the Union army at only 9 years old in 1861. He was turned down by a couple of regiments that passed through his hometown in Newark, Ohio so he just tagged along with the 22nd Massachusetts, which eventually adopted him and made him their mascot. Officers chipped and provided him with a shortened rifle and a uniform in his size as well as a $13.00 monthly salary.
Before long the newspapers pickup his story and he became a celebrity, playing his little drum into battle. He became known as the “drummer boy of Chicamauga” then during a battle of Shiloh in 1862 his drum had been smashed by cannon fire. This earned him the nickname of “Johnny Shiloh”. He attained the rank of brigadier general by the time he retired and died at age 85 in San Antonio, TX.
Johnny Shiloh was buried at Arlington National Cemetery. This song is a tribute to him and all the men who fought on both sides in the Civil War.
