Story Behind the Song
I thought I'd try my hand at writing a gospel song and this it it. I also wanted to try recording a gospel song by myself with all the traditional harmony of a Statler Brothers song. This recording is the result.
Lyrics
Lay Down My Regrets In The River Tonight
(C)2001, J. Eshleman, II BMI
There's a feeling that I get, when my soul is cold and wet,
And temptation's running through my aching mind,
You know I want to fly away, to the land that the prophets say,
Is going to be my home sweet home come harvest time.
(chorus)
So I'm going down tonight, to the sermon by candlelight,
I'm going sing those gospel songs that sooth my mind,
When the preacher asks us to pray I'm going to jump right up and say:
"I'm here to lay down my regrets in the river tonight".
Well ol' Mamma's been getting on, poor ol' Daddy's been dead and gone,
And will the circle be unbroken by and by ?
When it comes to the judgement day I know I'm going to be ok,
'Cause the good Lord's going to hear my song tonight... (chorus)
Yea listen up Lord way on high I'm getting down for you tonight,
I'm going sing those gospel songs 'til the morning light,
Im sending my soul to the promised land if I have to sing 'til I can't stand,
Cause I have laid down my regrets in the river tonight,
Yes Lord I've laid down my regrets in the river tonight,
Cause I've laid down my regrets in the river tonight..
