Story Behind the Song
I love this song ! In the business, this song is called an "insider" because it's about making music. I've been guilty of taking songs and songwriters into my studio and adding this and that and the other until the song sounds like an orchestra... and seen the faces of some people who liked the song better when it was simple. I wrote this song about them. As I did on this entire album, I performed all the parts on this recording myself.
Lyrics
Don't Them Them Change My Song Tonight
(C)2001, J.Eshleman, II BMI
Oh Lord I like to play my old guitar,
Write my music, sing my words out loud,
When I get through playing someone'll usually say,
"You're missing something...",
That's when I start to pray...
(chorus)
Oh Lord don't let 'em change my song tonight,
It's just my music, you know it feels alright,
Oh Lord don't let 'em change my song tonight,
'Cause it's all I've got, so do me right...
Oh Lord don't let 'em add no lead guitar,
They say it sounds good, it's going to make me a star,
Oh Lord don't let "em add no steel guitar,
To make it country, 'cause country ain't that hard...
Oh Lord don't let "em put no piano in,
I know it sounds good, can't we just pretend ?
Oh Lord don't let "em add no 'lectric strings,
I like it simple, can we start over again ? (chorus)
Oh Lord don't let "em dub the vocals in,
It adds the fullness, but that ain't the way I sing,
Oh Lord don't let "em change the melody,
They want crescendos, in three-part harmony... (chorus)
