Foot and Mouth disease affected everyone in rural communities in the UK in 2001. In Cumbria, the disease was absolutely rife, and people lost whole lifetime's work to the virus. Scary stuff. Social comment with heavy guitars. |

Story Behind the Song
Fastest song I've every written. Where I live, everyone was just waiting for this awful livestock disease to get to them. The frustration and anger makes people behave strangely. I wrote the song on a Thursday, and it got its first 'live' airing in Nottingham on the Friday!
Lyrics
Hurry up and be born!
Hurry up and be born!
The slaughterman is coming in the morning!
Come away form the wall!
Hide away from it all!
But your silent foe will still get you without warning.
And if you believe youre free,
It dont take eyes to see
That your freedom may well only be short-lived
Its such a greedy thing, this Spring Awakening
When the fields are empty and theres something in the wind.
We are the wagons of doom!
Were coming to you soon!
We are skulking in the street-light by your road end.
We take whatever we find,
Leave nothing living behind,
Except this gift that you can pass on to your best friend
So please dont make a fuss,
Your screams mean nothing to us,
We are grown immune to all your protesting
Its such an ugly thing, this Spring Awakening
When the fields are empty and theres something in the wind.
Look at this picture of mine:
I work one stroke at a time, and
It has taken me my whole lifetime to paint it.
I use a canvas of hide
With fleece carefully tied, and I have
Put too many hours in to re/place it
And if I believe the news
Its work that I must lose
When the MAFF men come to throw it on the fire
Its such a senseless thing, this Spring Awakening
When the fields are empty and theres something in the wind.
