Jimmy Buffet/Marty Robbins blend. The snowbirds should like this one (the hook will embed itself in your mind). A very positive song about a town that often gets the publicity shaft. Well, I liked living there! Okay, maybe the promotion exaggerates a little. | MP3.com CD: Southwestern Splendor - buy it!

Story Behind the Song
Originally written in 1993 based on my "life's story", but rewritten with a healthy injection of fiction in 1997. The physical description is still real, I indeed was raised in the L.A. area, and eventually moved to Yuma. But the rest was molded to make a more universally appealing song. My family says I sold out.
Lyrics
NOW I'M IN YUMA
©1993/1997 by John G. Fausett
I spent my childhood not far from the coast
Where the sea breeze would visit each day
Living in fear of something smothering me...
The rapid pulse of a sprawling L.A.
Great opportunities were always at hand
But I could tell I would never fit in
Then came the answer in the eastern sky...
An invitation from the desert wind
Now I'm in Yuma ---- Yuma, Arizona
Creosote fills the air with a pleasant aroma
I'll stay in Yuma where the winters
Delight you in the desert sun
And where the palm trees sway you to sleep
When the day is done
I left behind me the big city lights
On my adventure to a better land
Soon I was surrounded by towering dunes
In a fortress made of desert sand
The sun was intense and throwing daggers
Of fire in a searing, relentless barrage
Weary and thirsty, I thought I could see
What appeared to be a distant mirage
Now I'm in Yuma ---- Yuma, Arizona
Creosote fills the air with a pleasant aroma
I'll stay in Yuma where the winters
Delight you in the desert sun
And where the palm trees sway you to sleep
When the day is done
WHEN THE DESERT WIND BLOWS
IT CARRIES ME AWAY FROM MY PAST
AND AS MY SENSE OF BELONGING GROWS
I FEEL LIKE I'M HOME AT LAST!
Here in the valley two rivers combine
To make a pleasant oasis of green
Flourishing farmland is a welcome relief
From a desolate and arid scene
People are friendly and willing to help
And you can still find integrity
L.A. was always on the cutting edge
But urban jungles were never for me
Now I'm in Yuma ---- Yuma, Arizona
Creosote fills the air with a pleasant aroma
I'll stay in Yuma where the winters
Delight you in the desert sun
And where the palm trees sway you to sleep
When the day is done
"Now he's in Yuma ---- Yuma, Arizona
With a summer retreat
In the mountains near Sedona
He'll stay in Yuma where the winters
Delight you in the desert sun
And where the palm trees sway you to sleep
When the day is done"
And where the palm trees sway you to sleep
When the day is done!!!
