| Story Behind the Song
I first heard this old folk song when I was a kid, and I always liked the rhythm of the guitar and the terse lyrics. Poe and I recorded the rhythm tracks one day quite spontaneously with no programming. Mike came in to the studio later and did the great vocal.
LyricsHangman, hangman, hangman, slack your rope awhile
I think I see my father ridin' many a mile
Father did you bring any silver, father did you bring any gold
Or did you come to see me hanging from the gallows pole
No, I didn't bring any silver, no I didn't bring any gold
I just come to see you hangin' from the gallows pole

Hangman, hangman, hangman, slack your rope awhile
I think I see my mother ridin' many a mile
Mother did you bring any silver, mother did you bring any gold
Or did you come to see me h anging from the gallows pole
No, I couldn't get any silver, no I couldn't get any gold
I just came to pray for you hangin' from the gallows pole

Hangman, hangman, hangman, slack your rope awhile
I think I see my sweetheart ridin' many a mile
Honey did y ou bring any silver, honey did you bring any gold
Or did you come to see me hanging from the gallows pole
Yes, I brought a little silver, Yes, I brought a little gold
I didn't come to see you, baby, swingin' from the gallows pole
I didn't come to see y ou, hangin' from the gallows pole.
