A gentle melding of Balinese rhythms, Gershwin harmony, and

Story Behind the Song
The title comes from a book by Joseph Campbell, one of my heroes.
It concerns the story told in cultures worldwide of the Hero who
sends himself on a dangerous, unique, and personal trek. Percival,
Odysseus, Jesus, Luke Skywalker...
This music is from all over, too. The rhythmic structure is taken
from Balinese music, the chord structure is from Gershwin's "I've
Got Rhythm", and the plinky, blues-inflected solo is played on a
Japanese Shamisen, a lute-like instrument.
Because of the aural complexity of this track and others, the
Animal Dreams CD took 18 months to record. At times up to 77
simultaneous tracks are utilized, synchronizing takes made at
remote sites with in-studio percussion, synthesizers, strings
and winds. This particular cut, however, was wholly
done in the studio.
The Animal Dreams CD is available at ron-newman.
