Story Behind the Song
Key of C: home key of the piano (the white keys) and the simplest key in terms of sharps and flats--none. All the notes are natural.
Popularity: the most popular key with every kind of music.
On the Guitar: the key of C is centered on the 8th fret "bar" position, where the root note (C) is on both the first and sixth strings. The bar+2 position (10th fret) lets you easily reach the 4th of C (F) at the 13th fret. The bar+4 position coincides with the open position on the guitar, letting you echo licks in both open and 12th fret positions. At frets 1, 2, and 3 respectively the 4th, b5th and 5th are available on both 1st and 6th strings, making minor blues licks good here. Also, for once, the third interval between 2nd and 3rd strings works in favor of licks by letting the 5th (open G on the 3rd string) conveniently extend from the rest of the minor notes which are all 1st fret or above.
The open tones are all major notes, for instance major blues licks can hammer from the b3rd (Eb) at 4th fret 2nd string or 1st fret 4th string, up to the major 3rd (E, also available on both 1st and 6th strings open and on the 4th string 2nd fret). Major licks in open position C can also take advantage of the open position 6th (open A on 5th string) and open position 9th (open D on the fourth string). During V-chords (G in the key of C) you can also take advantage of the open B on the second string, since its the 3rd of the G chord (V in key of C).
