This is a song about shoes, and (reluctantly) about capitalism, and the commodification of identity. It is really a pop punk song, but there's a story behind that. |

Story Behind the Song
Sam and I wrote this song together when we were teenagers. We started a pop-punk band for which I bassed and he guitared. We never found a drummer, so the band didn't get very far. But we recorded them -- maybe just some of them; he has the tapes, ask him -- ; . He remixed the shoes song a while back, and sent it off to me (he lives on the opposite coast from me now) and I recalled and nostalgied. Freakin great remix. (A silly song got sillier.) (His remix is available for your listening pleasure at :

.) So a few weeks ago, I went ahead and rerecorded it. He doesn't appear on the song, because he has the tapes, and anyway I deleted the real audio player from my computer. But his spirit is there (I've had bottles of his spirit in my basement for years), and really, given my general lassitude, he probably wrote most of the song; but given my general amnesia toward my teenage-hood, I don't remember. I don't even have a basement.
This is a bit more high fi, so it might require some lowering of volume, though I strongly advise against that. It's great when it's REALLY loud.
Lyrics
Saw a nice pair of nice shoes
in the window of a store
wanted to buy wanted to keep
went home without and went to sleep
dreamed about those cool cool shoes
everybody had 'em except me
except me
if i had 'em i'd
be happy as a pig in shit i know
but i dont so
i will find a way to cope
and i'll go on ..
(repeat till things fall down.)
insert muddy, overdriven guitar solo and fade out when the drummer tires.
