Story Behind the Song
It's a cautionary tale about the dangers of premarital sex. A woman of high birth bumps ugly with a sailor then refuses to marry him because he is beneath her station. Shortly thereafter she discovers she's pregnant and changes her mind about the whole marriage thing. But her spurned lover will hear none of it and kicks the skanky ho to the curb. There is a referance to the willow tree in this song. Did some resaearch on it and apparently parts of the tree where used for contriceptive purposes. The root was brewed into a morning after tea and the leaf was used as a crude diaphram. ewwww. Needless to say it was far less than 100% effective.
