Story Behind the Song
This is one from birdseyeviewfromacage that we rearranged for a full on band. The vocals are beefed up too. Eric tossed in the bass, and Jason came up with a drum part, and we recorded it. It's all one-take, save for the vocals, which I overdubbed.
Lyrics
Grandmother once said that
there's a root to cure all
which ails in these hills.
Wish I knew
if that were true,
because I'm searching still
for a root buried deep
far underneath,
down beneath the ground--
too far to be seen...
too much like me?
I hope not too far to be found.
[chorus]
Is this Appalachia anymore?
Cause I'm not who I used to be anymore,
With my one foot in, one out the door
of some sacrificed world.
Grandmother was ignorant but wise,
quite unlike the men these days
with their never-ever eyes
that say you can't go home--
well, this I can't deny,
but though these hills have changed,
the greatest change
was always mine.
Now it's me I abhor.
