Story Behind the Song
The song was influenced by many of the hard knocks one takes along the road of life. Seems like there's alot of us who're damaged goods, though we carry the marks from our wounds on the inside where they can't be seen. These wounds sometimes never heal and their pain and the blemishes they leave on our spirit can last a lifetime. Aeriel Stiles had most of the song written only days before Stratosphere was to enter the studio with producer Steve Plunkett (autograph vocalist) for their first 5-song demo. Steve helped with some additional lyrics and music parts that helped define the song and "bring it home." I think we captured the vibe well, and the feeling while it was still fresh. Jeff did the lead vocasls. Aeriel did the guitars and bass. Josh Freese came in and played excellent drums on the track. Never hearing it before, he listened to half and said let's do it! He literally did it in two takes, one for the song and one for the outro.
Lyrics
I Wear The Scars
man and a woman live a crazy life
they raise up a child and they poison his mind
child don't know up from down
he's too busy gettin' kicked around and 'round
child grows up tryin' to understand
but he's still a beaten man
it's a wonder i'm still alive today, no one ever gave a damn
i wear the scars, from a life of pain
scars inside my brain, scars that never go away
i wear the scars, of love i never had
dreams that all went bad, i can never bring them back
listenin' to a song 'bout fire and rain
i've seen trouble and i've seen pain
inside my heart it's black and blue
all covered up and hidden out of view
livin' on dreams and promises, they all turn to lies
there's a thousand hard luck stories
that hide behind these eyes
i wear the scars, that cut too deep to see
they haunt my memories, scars of love you gave to me
i wear the scars, of wounds that never heal
i'm too numb to feel there's a chance for somethin' real
like a soul tattoo burned into my skin
i'd try to change my life, but where do i begin
