A musically accomplished combination of jazz/'world' ,and pop harmonic concepts, with unique melodies and deft percussionisms. If it were to be labeled 'world music'at all, one might call it 'world music' with the' gloves off'. This cd is unique because it was originally compiled as a specialized colleciton for dancers and choreographers, but developed kind af a secondary listenership after Gary DeMichele's sountracks for 'Big Night' and 'The Impostors' were released on TVT and RCA records respectively. Gary DeMichele has composed a soundtrack for Campbell Scott's and Eric Simonson's Hamlet which aired on the odyssey channel in Dec. 2000.Hamlet is also making the rounds on the film festival circuits this year (2001). Story Behind the Song
In Gary's words:"The title East Meets East, was meant ,simply, to describe
the stylistic marriage , (only in a general sense ,however),of asian influences(using shakahuchi sounds etc)and east indian sounds (hand drums, exotic scale stuctures, a 7/4 time signature). East (asia) meets East (india).
This melding of some components of these two general styles was kind of a jumping off point for me(allowing me ) to incorporate sort of 'Mahavishu'-like melodic and harmonic ideas. My intentions with East meets East, were not really meant to FULLY embody all the musical richness of both
cultures(an impossibly vast task) ,this piece was a just kind of a little flirtation with the hybridization of the two styles.
Not having the production budgets of film
or major label projects for this track, I recorded it at my home studio, using digital performer for the acoustic instruments and midi for the rest.
.When I record something at home,
I lose track of time completely(not rhythmically , I hope!) so I can't say honestly how long it took me, its true when I write too, but then, there are deadlines. For film scores, for example, with the tidbits that are constantly fed exed off, you have a better concept of your time parameters. When I'm buying studio time of course, the matter of watching the clock is a nerve-wrackingly different inconvenience. There are some performance things with the hand drums that I ..., maybe, I would have done differently thats where the obectivity of a second producer is helpful.
