Story Behind the Song
Basically, this was inspired by an idea I had. It seems whenever I am pushed into a verbal confrontation, I always seem to screw up my situation by not explaining myself or being totally truthful. Not so on paper. When I have time to think and plot out my argument or my decision, I am as truthful and honest as I can be...thus the title.
Lyrics
I should’ve written you a letter.
Phone calls are always so surreal.
I get so tongue-tied and frightened of saying how I feel.
I should’ve grabbed me some paper;
With written words, you know I cannot lie
I should’ve written you a letter instead of
Kicking you from my life
‘Cause telling you I don’t love you just wasn’t true.
The rift it caused in my heart, I never outgrew.
If I’d have taken time to plot out all of the things I needed to say,
You might still be with me today.
I physically ache because you’re not around
My heart’s a heavy weight around my neck
And it’s pulling me down, down, down.
But the worst part is your probably happy,
While I’m sitting here drowning in my loss.
You always had a way of moving on while I dwelt on what
I have not got.
But telling you I don’t love you just wasn’t true.
The pain it caused in my heart I never outgrew.
If only I hadn’t rushed the lie from my mouth,
You might still be with me today.
