Story Behind the Song
[Neil comments]
I guess either Daniel or I could have written this song without the other; but I'm glad we worked on it together. We have a lot in common about selective memories from unpleasant pasts. The idea for "A Different Yesterday" came from our discussions while we were writing "He Leads A Life." I think we were working on the bridge in that song and I had just come up with the line "but he doesn't know where they are or where he is today." And Danny added something like, "cause he remembers a different yesterday." It was a good line but we both agreed it might be an idea for another song, so we didn't use it.
A few days later we got together again to write some more. We got out our old notes and brainstormed for a while. The night before I'd had a dream. I don't usually remember dreams but this one was quite vivid. In the dream I was young (still in high school). I married the homecoming queen and got a big recording contract. I became famous and was rich before I turned twenty-one. As I described the dream, Danny mentioned that my dream didn't sound much like the way things actually turned out for me. Looking up from his notes, he said, "Sounds as though you draw your dreams from a different yesterday."
We had a hook for a new song.
The bridge section was all Danny's. He was married for several years. He wanted to have a big family but it never happened. It turned out to be a terrible marriage for the both of them (you can get a taste of what it was like in his song "No Reason To Want To Stay.") When he came up with the lines "where smiling eyes softly weep, watching babies fall asleep" I though he was going to cry -- he's such a wuss. (OK, it got to me too, but don't tell him that.)
When I was cutting the vocal for "A Different Yesterday" I got into a big argument with Calli, our producer (Calliope Lovelace). For some reason, she thought the last verse was supposed to be a resolution to the sad message of the song. She wanted to hear some relief in my voice in that last verse. She is an incredibly lovely creature; so it was hard to argue with her. This was her first solo album production and, although most of her ideas were good ones, I felt she was wrong here. My argument was that some stories are just sad and have no resolution. The last verse was really where the "feeling" of despair needed to be heard in the vocal. She finally agreed with me and coached me into what I think is the best delivered vocal line on the CD. Listen to the song and pay close attention to the line "but the years have been kind" in the last verse. I think I nailed it. What do you think?
Lyrics
A Different Yesterday
v1
The feelings are fuzzy
It was so long ago
Like flashes of memories from an ancient radio
Whenever really happened back then doesn't matter to me anyway
I draw my dreams from a different yesterday
v2
Some say that I'm crazy
But I'm doing alright
I've learned how to make it through the longest lonely night
Whenever really happened back then doesn't matter to me anyway
I draw my dreams from a different yesterday
bridge
Where smiling eyes softly weep
Watching babies fall asleep
Where kisses mean I love you too
Where I could build a world with you
v3
No, life wasn't easy
But the years have been kind
They smoothed out the edges as they mellowed in my mind
Whenever really happened back then doesn't matter to me anyway
I draw my dreams from a different yesterday
