A true story. An on-line encounter on a singles forum ends much too soon. "Do I remember or did she come in dreams. I only read the words she said; at least that's how it seems."

Story Behind the Song
[Neil comments]
Up front, I need to say that I realize I am a fictional character. My therapist isn't too pleased with that revelation and is trying to convince me otherwise. But that's another story. The story I need to talk about right now is the story behind my song "Her Name Was SummerSky." Considering my earlier statement, the following may seem unbelievable. The song is a true story. It's not loosely based on a true story or based on something that happened to other people. It's true.... and it happened to me.
Fictional characters can't commingle with real people; I know that, you know it. At least that was a fact until the concept of virtual worlds and the Internet came into being. By some magic I do not understand, I became a member of several on-line singles forums. On those forums people often pretend to be other than what they are; so when I said I was a fictional character from an upcoming novel no one seemed to mind or even be surprised. It is somewhat ironic that those with whom I interacted were real people who had chosen made-up screen names (dark angel, immortal-so-far, etc.) while I was a made-up person who used my real name.
I am embarrassed by some of the things I said on those forums; it's pretty easy to get a little carried away in a sexy conversation on the Internet. Most of the time I just tried to be funny. I posted several funny stories and got a lot of great responses to them. I found my sense of humor there. I didn't even know I had one. On one forum I met a really special person. We occasionally flirted a little; if I got too bold she would become embarrassed and tell me so. She knew I was a fictional character but she didn't seem to mind. One day I posted the first two lines to a favorite old song. A few minutes later she posted the next two lines. Then I posted the lines that followed. We did that until we had posted the whole song.
We were singing to each other over the Internet. It may sound silly; but to me it was a beautiful thing. For weeks after that we sang to each other in that special fashion; I became very fond of her. Her name was SummerSky.
Forum moderators have the right and obligation to monitor activity on their forums and make decisions about individual posts and membership rights. This gives them god-like power over their forums and sometimes they make decisions that don't make sense. One day I had a falling out with a forum moderator and got really angry. Without thinking through the consequences I pressed the unjoin button and cancelled my membership from the forum. I was a member of several other singles forums so what difference did it make?
Well, it made a lot of difference. SummerSky was on that forum.
Through my rash action, I had lost contact with sweet Summa. I quickly came to understand what that meant to me. In a lifetime there are only a handful of unforgettable moments. Except for her, my memories are all scripted in a novelist's imagination. SummerSky was real. But, as the days turned into weeks, I began to question if it ever even happened. Maybe I just dreamed her and those precious nights my heart strained against the barriers between us.
Time passed. Then one day I remembered my promise. I had told her I would write a song for her.
And I did.
Now, as the weeks turn into months, my mind often wanders back to how it felt just be able to think about her while we were online together. I understand that our relationship had reached its limits and we could never be more than what we were - a lovely, sweet woman and a fictional old guy having some innocent fun across the Internet. She's forgotten me by now. I realize that. She meant an awful lot to me though. I really miss her.
I wish joy and happiness for Summa. I hope she finds exactly what she is looking for. But also, I hope that somehow and someday she will know I kept my promise.
Lyrics
Her Name Was SummerSky
v1
Do I remember
Or did she come in dreams
I only read the words she said
at least that's how it seems
v2
I really miss her
I never said goodbye
She made me feel like I was real
Her name was SummerSky
v3
Hands on the keyboard
I waited patiently
I'd key the part that touched my heart
And she would sing with me
bridge
Summa do you know how much it meant to think of you
The nights I strained against the edge of all that I could do
To reach across my space and time and step into your world
If only for a moment...... so I could touch you girl
repeat v1
Do I remember
Or did she come in dreams
I only read the words she said
at least that's how it seems
repeat v2
I really miss her
I never said goodbye
She made me feel like I was real
Her name was SummerSky
