Special Thanks
First, I thank God for providing the avenue to get some of the music in my heart out to the people who would be blessed by it. It is amazing to me how suddenly God brought this vision to pass. Sure, at the end of the process it got pretty hectic, but after 13 years of procrastination and now a new baby on the way, it was about time. Speaking of time, I wouldn’t have made it through the “crunch” without the support and contribution of the following people whom I would like to thank for believing in me and who desired to see what God would do through this music:
To Allison
You deserve a medal. Like one the size of Manhattan Is land. You are the reason I dared to begin this project in the first place and push through to the end. Emmanuel wouldn’t even have made it to the album without your encouragement! Even though the end seemed almost impossible to see, you never gave up. You are a true helper, best friend and a Proverbs 31 wife! (And you make one great CD burner too!)
To Baby Elliott
We know you’re in there. You get a medal too (a little bitty one) for dealing with all the stress Mommy had to carry around the last few weeks.
To Mom & Dad
For always giving me your best: your love, teaching, building confidence in me, sending me to the best schools... For reading Proverbs nightly whether I wanted to hear them or not, for twisting my arm to continue piano lessons after I announced “I can now name all the notes on the keyboard. What else could there be to know?” For insisting I play in Naples on the piano missing 9 keys (and giving Satan a black eye). Yeah, you know the rest.
To Michael Howell
Above and beyond. How do you keep up this pace anyway? Thanks for putting up with me and breathing new life into the “oldies.”
To EMIC
To the members and to Pastors George, Terri, Leon, Jim, Stan, Topher, Geoff and all those on staff who either encouraged me to pursue my vision or just stopped and prayed it through with me.
To the “Crew”
Karen, Bart, Rick, Rosie, Tina, Chris, Wayne, Michael A., Ken and Jan for always brainstorming with Allison and me and for pitching in at the last minute!
To David Rodgers
For all your concessions on my behalf (we won’t go into detail here!), your mentorship, and providing an atmosphere for the staff to pursue their dreams—since day one! And to the staff of Kenneth Copeland Publications, Marketing, Wholesale, and everyone else who keeps asking me if I ha ve an album yet and supported me every time I played the piano.
Notes on the music
Emmanuel means “God with us.” Every piece on this album represents the Almighty
intervening in our world today and throughout history. For example, I Will Call Upon the Lo rd comes from Psalm 18 which reminds us that God hears our prayers and answers—and does it in grand style—when we call on Him. The Christmas music, of course, speaks of God’s most precious gift of salvation—breaking through time and space to rescue us fro m this fallen world. Joshua and Caleb find beauty and mystery in the promised land and rush back to the camp with joy to boast on God’s ability to break through doubts, fears, and real enemies, and to bring to pass the dreams He’s promised.
On the music itself: this a collection I have actually worked on at some point or another during the past ten years. There are many more recorded improvisations and other pieces (even one fun arrangement I intended for this album but didn’t remember it until it was a lready too late!) Whenever I’ve had some free time at the piano, I often love to sit, read aloud (or have a friend read aloud) a Bible story while I improvise my interpretation of the events. That’s how the Joseph Improvisations came about. Another examp le, the piano and orchestral version of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, is actually an adaptation of a 45-minute piece that includes a narrator telling the life story of King David—a type and shadow of Emmanuel yet to come again and ransom not only “captive Isr ael” but all who have chosen to accept Him as Lord.x
