During Sorghum harvest time in Bonaire the Kunuku (farm)-owners, with the help of neighbors, friends and relatives, harvest the ripe and dry sorghum. To reward all this help and to celebrate the good harvest, a Simadan is set up at the Kunuku. It consists of dance, music, food, and abundant high spirits. Simadan has many traditional songs, all of which are sung in call-and-response form. The most popular is: Remailo. |
CD: Simadan
Label: Rincon 23-22
Credits: I would like to express my deepest respect for the inspiration given to me by Choir Kanta Orkidia and Grupo Watapana. It's from your spirit I'm able to produce this wonderful music from Bonaire. Also thanks to Niki Buzz for his wonderful orchestrations and Photo Studio Dilara for the cover photography. Simadan is my contribution to the concervacion of the own Antillean cultural indentity and simultaneously homage to all the artists who during centuries have dedicated their beautiful arts to this. |
Story Behind the Song
The musicians use various typical instruments, including the marimba, wiri (guiro), bari (small drum), karko (empty conchshell -- strombus gigas linne), triangle, guitar, quarta (four-stringed guitar), and plain hand-clapping.
