"The Ghost Of Saturday Night" | genre: Americana | |

Laid back, honest...pretty stripped down. Just electric guitar and vocals. That may or may not change. Not the happiest thing on earth, but it does say Neosporin in it...rather smoothly, if that's possible. |

Story Behind the Song
Love's a funny thing...not like funny "ha ha" though. This song was obviously written on a Saturday night. The lyrics spawned from a conversation where the woman in question had told me over the phone that she had something to tell me that could change the nature of our association. She told me that it needed to be dealt with face to face. I, naturally(given horrendous past experiences), assumed it was something catastrophic. Turns out it wasn't bad at all. It was just the next step in what has been the best experience of my life. She had warned me not too write anything based on my initial reaction...told me, in fact, that I would feel silly after I found out what the talk was about(we had the talk in the parking lot of an emergency room, as both of my kidneys were monumentally infected and needed immediate treatment). She was almost right about that, but we did get this song out of my jumping to the wrong conclusion.
Dylan & I recorded this one rather quickly at New Revenge Studios on May 29, 2001. No real gimmicks or tricks here...it is what it is. It was also enough to make us want to create more music together.
I sang my rough idea of what I wanted this to sound like and he more than pleased me with the music he chose. We knew that we weren't wasting our time with this collaboration. I didn't realize that Tom Waits had already made use of this title...that has cast a dark cloud over this one for me. The title will probably be slightly altered for the actual CD(we dropped "the").
Send me five bucks and I'll tell you another story...yeah, all right, whatever.

Lyrics
damn it all, I did it again
went and made some effort to live
when the hell am I gonna learn
play with fire...you will get burned
no time left to speak of love
when I was ready she was done
words make the simple complicated
if she had asked, I would have waited.
there's nothin' that I wouldn't have done
but when it came to requests she only had one
my walkin' away was the favor she wanted
now I'm left here, alone and so haunted.
damn it all, I spoke too much
killed the thing before we could touch
she rubbed Neosporin on my wound
not too much; it'll have to do
for any promises it's too late
but the ones I've made I will not break
I'll be loyal to a memory
always wonderin' why she set me free.
(repeat first verse)
damn it all, I blew it again.(x4)
