Story Behind the Song
Inspired by a flight over the midwest, when the video screen showed a map of our course over Omaha and Salt Lake City. I later observed that we never wrote a song with the word "baby" in it, and Carl said "let's keep it that way"- so it's in every verse. Mike Baumer sings and plays lead guitar, and Kenny Pritchett offers two fine guitar tracks- including a smokin' slide.
Lyrics
Well, I woke up this morning and I said today's the day
There isn't anything around here standing in my way
My baby left me yesterday, today she broke my heart
And now I know I'm headed West, but not so very far.
I'm leaving Omaha for Salt Lake City
the stars above never looked so pretty
I tried before but this time I'm ready
And I'm going out there to stay, and it's only two states away.
Nebraska's not the kind of place a man like me belongs
I know a lot of things, and I am learning right from wrong
My baby left me yesterday, but now I'm havin' fun
Bruce Springsteen wrote a song about it, now I'm born to run.
Omaha, Omaha say goodbye
Salt Lake City, tell me no lies
Omaha, Omaha made me cry
I don't know if I'll make it, but I know I'm
gonna try
Now Utah is a state where everybody wants to go
They're rafting in the rapids and they're skiing in the snow
My baby left me yesterday, soon everyone will see
I'll settle down with a Mormon girl and raise a family.
