Story Behind the Song
My most recent software company went belly-up and laid everyone off due to the dot com collapse. I wrote this song in my spare time while working as an extra on the _Matrix_ sequels. It won "Best Original Song" at a recent NCSA (Northern California Songwriter's Association) open mike event.
This is a fairly cheesy slapped-together recording; just me and my guitar in front of a single mediocre microphone. I'll be doing a more professional version in the studio soon but wanted to put this version out ASAP because the song is so topical.
Lyrics
Dot Com Meltdown Blues
Copyright 2001 by Glen Raphael
Once I built a website, made it run, made it race against time
Once I built a website; now it's done. Brother can you spare a dime?
My momma always told me what goes up comes down
I bet it all on eBay, and now I wear a frown
I've got the blues, the dot com meltdown blues
Had to ask my doctor, "Is there something I can use
To cure these dot com meltdown blues?"
Lost my maserati, my stock options too
Without my house in Woodside don't know what I'm gonna do
Got the blues, the dot com meltdown blues
Must need another Prosac, 'cause I'm a bit confused
About these dot com meltdown blues
Dot com blues: when you're so far up you've got a long way down to fall
Dot com blues: it's a little awkward when friends call -- you're on unemployment!
Dot com blues: never thought I'd use the daily Merc to patch my bed
Dot com blues: rather read the Chronicle instead?
Wish we'd had...a product! (of our own)
I used to have a girlfriend
I used to have a car
I used to get free sodas
I used to be a star
But now, just got those dot com meltdown blues
The only jobs remaining, are at Krispy Kreme Krews
Got those dot com meltdown, dot com meltdown blues.
(two optional additional verses follow, for use with a chorus repetition or extended blues break)
CS degree from Berkeley, or Harvard MBA
It doesn't matter what you've got, those blues are here to stay
Got the blues, the dot com meltdown blues
Gave up the personal trainer 'cause I couldn't pay her dues
Dot com meltdown blues
A million bucks in options, a great big wad of cash
Whatever could have made me think that it could last
Got the blues, the dot com meltdown blues
Had to give up cable; you KNOW that's hard to lose
When you've got dot com meltdown blues
