Carl Teike, Germany's Greatest March Composer
Born in Altdamm, Germany, 1864 -Died in Lansberg/Warthe, 1922
Carl Albert Hermann Teike was a twenty-five old military bandsman when he composed a new march and asked his conductor if it could be performed. After the first reading the bandmaster indifferently told Teike to throw the manuscript into the fire. We are indeed fortunate that Teike refused the advice and over a century later this march Alte Kameraden-Old Comrades remains one of the worlds most beloved of all marches. In a poll conducted by Norman Smith of Lake Charles Louisiana in 1989 this march was third on the all time list of the world's most popular marches.
Carl Teike was the son of a blacksmith and at the age of fourteen began five years with Paul Boöttcher . He was soon playing French Horn and String Bass and began performing in various orchestras in the region. In 1883 Teike moved to the German city of Ulm and joined the King Karl Regiment band as on French horn. He supplemented his pay by playing horn and percussion in the Ulm City Theater Orchestra. With his extra income he was able to study privately. He began to compose almost without interruption. This was a golden age of the great German and Austrian composers and he was influenced by he music of Johann Schrammel and the great Strauss family. His first march composition was Am Danube-On the Shores of the Danube.
He continued to write but after facing the bitter disappointment of his bandmasters lack of appreciation for his march Old Comrades Teike took his discharge from the Army and began a career as city policeman beginning in Ulm and later moving to Potsdam. He continued to compose march after march and was referred to as the "Musical Policeman". He had various hobbies including billiards and fishing. He enjoyed the outdoors and walked extensively in the forests surrounding Potsdam. In 1909 Teike moved once again taking up residence in Lansberg(now part of Poland) where he took a position of Postmaster. He continued composing marches until his death in 1922 of influenza. He was honored with a stone monument in Lansberg And a wall marker in Potsdam. The late Karl Anton Dòll authored a book about Teike (his uncle) entitled "Old Comrades". Teike wrote over 100 Marches and several concert works consisting of waltzes, polkas, and various arrangements of military band music. His transcription of the Overture "Morning Noon and Night" is only one of many which were published in Germany before the Great War.

Ob in Freude, ob in Not,
Bleiben wir getreu bis in den Tod.
Trinket aus und schenket ein
Und laßt uns alte Kameraden sein.
Alte Kameraden auf dem Marsch durchs Land
Schließen Freundschaft Felsenfest und treu.
Ob in Not oder in Gefahr, stets zusammen
Alter Wein gibt Mut und Kraft;
Denn es schmeckt des Weines Lebenssaft.
Sind wir alt, das Herz bleibt jung
Und gewaltig die Erinnerung.
Ob in Freude, ob in Not,
Bleiben wir getreu bis in den Tod.
Trinket aus und schenket ein
Und laßt uns alte Kameraden sein.
Sind wir alt, das Herz bleibt jung,
Schwelgen in Erinnerung.
Trinket aus, schenket ein
Und laßt uns Kameraden sein
