Story Behind the Song
About two and a half years ago my girlfriend's brother was diagnosed with leukemia. She was naturally extremely upset by this and took a trip out to see him. On the first night she was away I couldn't sleep at all. I stayed up all night long worrying about her and her brother, wondering what the future held for the two of them and how it would affect our future together. I wrote the song "Hero" that late night and into the early morning hours. This song is about my wanting to convey that no matter what happened I would be there to love and comfort her in her time of need.
I'm pleased to say, thankfully, that her brother's cancer has been in full remission for two years now.
Lyrics
When you get to where you're going, just tell me you're all right
I don't want to have to wonder what happened there tonight
Now the morning is a comin' and I cannot sleep tonight
And I wonder, are you thinking of me on your flight, well you might
Life can be hard, but I can be your shoulder
Standin' tall, baby, stronger than all
Wherever you go, whatever you do, I will be there
Don't you know
Chorus
No matter what goes down I'll be right beside you
Through the thick and thin I will be right beside you
In your darkest hour I will be your light
You don't need to hide and you won't have to run
I'll be there for you
Now I know that you've been tryin' to keep an armored heart
You don't want to let this tragedy tear your world apart
So you got to keep on livin', you pretend it's all a dream
In the morning you will wake up and you'll feel so free
Life can be hard, but I can be your hero
Standin' tall, I'll be stronger than all
Whatever the cost, whenever the cold, I will be there
To keep you warm
Chorus
I will be your guide brighter than the sun
I will be the one pulling for you, too
I'll be there for you
