    Story Behind the Song
Andy had the music sitting around for quite some time, but was stuck on the lyrics. He had the title "What Shade of Blue" and several sets of words that weren't working. He gave the song to Vicky Woodworth, an absolute genius songwriter, who promptly conjured the lyrics in their final form in one evening. Everything was recorded with no more than 3 takes; the song seemed to play itself. We added Michael Shay's brilliant bass & cello parts, and it was a done deal.
The lyrics speak of an unrequited love. The rest, I think, is best told by the song itself

    Lyrics
    What Shade
    (C) 2001 Andy Ard, Victoria Woodworth

I am a dreamer, you are the dream
It is my sad misfortune to be as I seem
I'm living on fleeting moments and in between them
    You never see them
    Maybe they're blue
What shade are my eyes to you?

What in this whole world was I thinking of?
    Shoulda been watching my two-step
    Not falling in love
It's always too much for me
    And never enough

    You never see them
    Well, baby they're blue
What shade are my eyes to you?
    And never enough

    [Instrumental]

Safe in your corner, just trailing your smoke
And checking to see if anybody's getting your jokes
But you never see me try to be true
What shade are my eyes to you?

No, you never see me try to be true
What shade are my eyes to you?
